While Kim Kardashian was busy balancing stemware on her surgically inflated rear — a feat that basically reduced online traffic to rubbernecking — I was busy trying to figure out how we got here. Because from the “Hottentot Venus” to Nicki Minaj, black women and our bodies –and especially our booties — have been curiosities, cause for concern even, but seldom celebrated enough to break the Internet.

Why does it take Kim Kardashian’s bare backside to elevate what’s characteristic for scores of black women?
This past summer, after she caught wind of the backlash over the cheeky cover art for her single “Anaconda,” Nicki flipped her wig over the double standard. Plastering her Instagram with perfectly “acceptable” back shots of white Sports Illustrated models, the Young Money rapper then re-posted her own provocative pose with a striking caption: “Unacceptable.”
