The great Manchester United yard sale has been hyped up all summer long by the
blood thirsty British tabloids but with three days left in the transfer window,
Louis Van Gaal has washed his hands off the largely underwhelming business
adventure despite the £132m outlay. The Man United boss has told the Daily Mail that he doesn’t have
the ‘final say’ on transfer at Old Trafford and he isn’t sure of who else would
be joining the club before deadline day. And, in news that will further break
Man United fans’ hearts, Van Gaal has stated that Ed Woodward has the final
word on any player arrivals at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, thus breaking another
sinuous thread left behind by Sir Alex Ferguson.
United have brought in Ander
Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria this summer but have yet to
solve any real issues in defence or midfield. The sheer lack of numbers and
quality in those two areas has contributed to United’s woeful start to the
Premier League campaign if fans hoped that Artuto Vidal, William Carvalho or
Daley Blind might still jet into before Monday night to lift the gloom around
their shrine, Van Gaal has poured cold water on the last remaining strand of
hope.
“I give my opinion and the player
can do what he wants with that opinion. Of course I shall say which
players I want and which are better to leave and Ed (Woodward) is doing the
transfer market. I don't interfere in that process, ” said the veteran Dutchman.
The only positive for the fans is that some faces are beginning to leave the
ailing club as Wilfried Zaha has sealed a loan move back to Crystal Palace
while Tom Cleverly, Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck could also leave before
Monday. The news of Cleverly’s departure should give a hint about the possible
arrival of a new midfielder, whether it is one of Vidal or Carvalho now depends
on Woodward’s mojo.
