Sold by Manchester United's new Manager Louis van Gaal this summer for his
'poor' goal scoring record, having netted just 29 goals in 142 games for United,
Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has hit back at his former boss for failing to
understand the basics of the game.
Welbeck, who scored the first
hat-trick of his professional career in midweek for Arsenal against Galatasaray
in the Champions League, lashed out at Van Gaal for failing to understand that
you need to play in a striker's role to score goals!
Buoyed by his 4 goals in 8 games
for Arsenal since his move to North London, Welbeck said, "Obviously
people can say I have not scored enough goals, but you stick the best strikers
on the wing in a four-man midfield and see if they score."
The 23 year old Englishman added,
"Nobody can really criticise my finishing because they don't really see me
playing in a forward position too often. But now I am getting into these
positions I want to be sticking the ball in the back of the net. I am sure it's
the same with every other striker."
Welbeck also has the backing of
his new Manager Arsene Wenger, who is known for his ability to create some
fantastic players from raw talent. Wenger added, "You can see that
he's improving. That is very positive and there's a lot more to come from
him,"
One can't help but
wonder if Manchester United won't suffer some seller's remorse later this year,
Arsenal fans meanwhile aren't complaining!
